For most rebreather divers, air or nitrox diluent is still the right call. It’s cheap, it’s everywhere, and your unit already runs it. Helium earns its place once depth pushes narcosis and breathing resistance past what you can manage. That switch costs more than a fill. Three parts of your kit have to change: how you analyze gas, what inflates your drysuit, and where you get filled. Sort them out before the trip, not on the boat.

Where air diluent stops being the easy answer

Air diluent works until two things catch up with you. Narcosis dulls your judgment. And the gas gets thick enough that breathing becomes work. Divers Alert Network puts the usual crossover in a narrow band. Because helium is nonnarcotic, it has become standard practice to use it in mixes when diving to depths greater than about 150-165 feet. Shallower than that, most loop divers are fine on air.

Helium fixes both problems at once. It isn’t narcotic, and it’s light. That second property matters more than divers expect. Rising gas density is what makes a deep dive feel like breathing through a straw, and helium is the only practical way to bring it back down.

So the trigger isn’t a certification card or a target depth on a wish list. It’s the point where your own dives start bumping into narcosis or breathing effort. Until then, helium buys you very little and costs you plenty.

Trimix means reading two gases, not one

Your nitrox analyzer reads oxygen. That’s all it reads. Put it on a trimix fill and it hands you a number that looks perfectly reasonable and tells you almost nothing. The rest of that bottle could be nitrogen or helium in almost any ratio.

A helium-capable analyzer stops being a luxury at this point. You need both fractions before the gas goes anywhere near the loop. Funny enough, the trimix diving gear conversation usually starts with a bigger cylinder. It should start with an analyzer.

There’s a second reason that reading matters so much. Trimix comes in two broad flavors. A normoxic trimix still holds enough oxygen to breathe safely at the surface. A hypoxic blend doesn’t, and breathing one shallow can put you down before you understand what’s happening. Your analyzer is what separates those two. The label only repeats what somebody else measured, on a day you weren’t there.

Labeling travels with analysis. Once you’re carrying more than one mix, marking the cylinder so nobody has to guess is what keeps a bottle of deep mix from being breathed shallow, or the reverse. Write the mix, the date, and the maximum operating depth. Then check it again on the boat.

Helium takes warmth back out of your drysuit

This is the one that catches people. On most closed-circuit setups the drysuit inflation hose runs off the diluent bottle. Switch that bottle to trimix and you are now filling your suit with helium.

Helium moves heat, and it moves it fast. A review of dry suit inflation gases published through the National Library of Medicine put a number on it. Thermal insulation was found to decrease by 71% with the use of trimix for dry suit inflation compared to air as insulation gas. That is not a small penalty when you’re hanging on a deco stop in cold water.

The fix is cheap. Give the suit its own small cylinder so it never sees helium at all.

What goes in that bottle is a fairer question than most divers realize. Argon gets recommended constantly because its thermal conductivity is about 32% lower than air’s. But when Royal Netherlands Navy divers tested argon against air on one-hour dives in 13°C water, the researchers found argon had no added value for thermal insulation. Plain air in a dedicated bottle solves most of the problem. Argon is a refinement, not a rescue.

Either way you’re hanging one more cylinder off your kit, and whether it’s steel or aluminum will change how the whole rig trims out.

The fill you can get decides the dive you can plan

Helium doesn’t come out of a compressor. Someone has to blend it, and that means the shop needs helium in stock plus the training to mix it properly. Plenty of good fill stations don’t.

This is the constraint that quietly ruins trip plans. You can own the analyzer, rig the suit bottle, finish the course, and still be stuck because the only fill station within two hours does air and nitrox. Helium supply also moves with the wider market, so price and availability aren’t fixed from one season to the next.

Ask before you commit. What mixes do they blend, what do they charge for helium, and how much notice do they need? Which way your own diving points

Stay on air or nitrox diluent when your dives sit above that band

If your logged dives live in the 100 to 150 foot range, air diluent is doing its job. Your money buys more safety in cells, bailout, and time in the water than it does in helium. Revisit the question when your profiles change, not before.

Move to trimix diluent when depth or breathing effort is already limiting you

If you’re finishing dives feeling foggy, or working to breathe at the bottom, that’s the signal. Budget for all three changes at once. An analyzer you can’t afford this year is an analyzer you’ll borrow, and borrowed analysis is how people breathe the wrong gas.

Wait if the local fill situation isn’t sorted

Gear you can’t fill is decoration. If helium is a four-hour drive away and your diving is mostly local, put the money elsewhere and revisit it when you’re planning a trip that genuinely needs the depth.

Where trimix genuinely loses

Helium takes flexibility away from you. Air diluent lets you show up and dive. Trimix makes every dive a planned dive, because the mix, the decompression schedule, and the bailout all have to be decided together in advance. That’s the honest cost, and it’s a bigger one than the money for most people. None of what’s above replaces a deep trimix dive plan; it’s what has to be true before you can execute one.

Frequently Asked Questions About Trimix Diluent

Can I use my nitrox analyzer on a trimix fill?

Not on its own. A nitrox analyzer measures the oxygen fraction and nothing else, so it can’t tell you how much of the remainder is helium and how much is nitrogen. You need a helium-capable analyzer as well, and you should read both fractions yourself rather than trusting the sticker.

Do I have to use argon in my drysuit?

No. The important step is getting helium out of the suit, not getting argon into it. A dedicated air bottle achieves that, and the measured advantage of argon over air was not significant in the cold-water testing cited above. Argon is a reasonable upgrade if you’re already carrying a separate suit supply.

Does trimix diluent change my scrubber duration?

The mix itself doesn’t add carbon dioxide, so helium isn’t what empties your scrubber. Depth, work rate and water temperature drive that. Helium does carry heat away more readily, which can leave a cold scrubber colder, so watch your duration margins on deep dives in cold water.
